This relates to getting the message "printer error" when you try to open a
dBASE 5.* program after installing a new printer. My specifics are 98SE, AMD
2200+,ASUS Board, HP Deskjet Printer. In a previous post I related a work
around for this problem. I found that if you set up a printer as a "generic
text" printer and selected it as your default printer, you could then
re-select the 5650 and everything would work until you re-booted. Well there
is a better way :
HP has a driver/software download that better supports dBASE. They call it
the "HP Deskjet 5600 Basic Feature Driver - For Parallel Cable Only " this
can be downloaded at :
http://h20015.www2.hp.com/en/softwareDownloadIndex.jhtml?reg=&cc=us&softitem=dj-13609-2&prodId=hpdeskjet5304445&lc=en&plc=&sw_lang=en&pagetype=software
If you have a different version of windows, HP has other drivers to
download. I f you are having the same problem with a different printer, Try
that manufacture's web site.
The problem here seemes to be that dBASE 5.* is getting a little old for
some of the new features available on the latest hardware. So what your
looking for is a driver package that supports older software. I printed out
the download/install instructions from the above page and then un-installed
my 5650 before proceding with the download/install. The instructions are
ambigious : They say the Parallel cable must be unplugged before proceeding
and not to plug it back in untill the inst. software tells you to (which it
never does). Then just below that, it tells you to plug in the cable.
I left mine unplugged during the whole process. I then plugged it back in
for the re-boot. When windows looks for the driver select specifec location
and point to the one you just downloaded. This line was already filled out
when I did this.
FINALLY !! Every thing works just as it should.
Hope this helps

On behalf of many I'd like to thank you for this information. This

Does this only work on PARELLEL printers and/or deskjet printers or is
this a generic fix for all printers and do you have any more info.

HP Printers are notoriously bug-ridden, usually every later version
helps some.
